The old world opened the gates to Hell. By the time they were closed almost half of humanity was dead. What survived was rebuilt beneath the Cortex. A single global government created to contain the supernatural and ensure catastrophe could never happen again. Decades later the emergency never ended. Surveillance is everywhere. Registration is mandatory. Suspicion is encouraged. The supernatural is no secret. It lives beside humanity under watch. Some people are born changed. Vampires hunger. Werewolves struggle against what waits beneath the skin. Others inherit stranger bloodlines and powers the Cortex would rather catalogue contain or weaponize. Paroxysm is a persistent text based multiplayer roleplaying game set in a modern supernatural dystopia. There is no predetermined story and no chosen protagonist. Players form societies pursue agendas make enemies uncover secrets seize territory and live with the consequences of what they do. Conflict matters. Information matters. Reputation matters. Characters can gain power lose everything betray one another disappear or die. The world is designed to react rather than protect. You might become a loyal servant of the Cortex. You might build something outside its control. You might hunt monsters become one or decide that the people hunting them are worse. Whatever you choose someone is probably watching.
