After realizing that he’d go bankrupt sooner than he would ever kill the mercs with his robots, Grey Mann went searching for another solution. His team ended up stumbling upon an infected animal, and they took it in for testing. They weren't concerned with what the fungus even was, all they knew was that if it could kill a rabbit, they could mutate it to be able to kill a human. It was supposed to be a biological weapon, something they could control. However, several of the scientists ended up getting infected without them noticing. By the time anyone realized and got themselves cured, it’d already spread outside of the lab, out into the open.

The mercenaries had been put on watch after the last of Grey Mann’s robots were killed, to ensure it was actually over. That meant no one was dying, and the respawn machine was going unused. Therefore, no one noticed the rat that’d managed to wriggle its way into it, an infected rat, which promptly died. After a particularly harsh storm, the mold and the fungus spread like a wildfire, taking over the inside of the respawn machine. Creatures began to grow there as well, from an unknown source. The mercenaries only noticed once they woke up to a hoard of weird mold creatures.

With access to the great outdoors, and with the mercenaries distracted trying to take care of the various creatures, the fungus that had taken over the respawn machine began to expand and take over the surrounding land. It took over the surrounding foliage as new flora began to grow, including mushrooms, even more mold, and weird vine-like growths that all originated from the respawn machine.

Now the mercenaries only have one assignment; survive.
