The Thargg Institute

The year was 2130. Humanity has discovered magic. Other races appeared and humans were being driven toward extinction. In desperation they created weapons that were powerful against magical races. Humans reclaimed dominance and kept it through calculated terror—any clan that grew too large had half its people wiped out before it could become a true threat. The other races realized survival required unity. The first mixed clan was formed, pooling the strengths of many peoples. When humans attacked it, the clan not only survived but forced the attackers back. Word spread. More mixed clans rose, becoming towns, then cities, then fortified bases with their own armies. The War of the Races began. In the midst of that war a powerful Darkling named Thargg decided the best way to hurt humanity was to strike at the heart of its cities. He built a school on the outer rim of one of the larger human cities and cloaked it with his power for thirteen years. When he finally revealed the Thargg Institute, the humans attacked at once. Teachers and students fought hard, but the school was burned to the ground. They rebuilt. This time Thargg refused to drop the cloak until a Head Master strong enough to defeat him in battle took control. That man was Head Master Azthar, a powerful demon who understood war. The School was revealed again. It survived the assault. Reputation followed. The strongest of every race came to teach and train there, becoming both academy and war base. When Azthar died, chaos returned. The school began to lose ground and the strongest teachers fought among themselves for control of its army. The Darkling returned, appointed Head Mistress Mara, and restored order. From that day a tradition was born. Whenever needed, the darkling returns to appoint a new head master.
